Emergency Department: Open 24/7
When you live near one of Georgia's most beautiful lakes, you want every part of your life here to feel like it belongs, including your healthcare. That's exactly what St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital has been delivering to the Lake Oconee community since opening its doors in November 2013. Friendly faces, expert care, and a genuine commitment to the people of Greene County - this is a hospital that feels like home.
A Hospital Built for This Community
Healthcare in Greene County has deep roots. It traces back to 1949, when Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital was founded in Greensboro as one of the first hospitals built under the Hill-Burton Act, a landmark piece of legislation designed to bring quality medical care to rural America. For decades, that hospital served the region with dedication.
As the Lake Oconee area grew and flourished, so did the need for modern, comprehensive healthcare close to home. In 2012, Athens-based St. Mary's Health Care System, a proud member of the national Trinity Health network, stepped in, acquiring the facility (then known as Saint Joseph at East Georgia Hospital) and renaming it St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital.
They didn't just take over. They got to work.
Building Something New - Together
From the very beginning, this was a community project. St. Mary's immediately began planning a state-of-the-art replacement facility, and the Lake Oconee community rallied behind it. A fundraising committee of 20 people, including 15 Reynolds Lake Oconee members, came together to help make the new hospital a reality.
On November 25, 2013, the doors of the new Good Samaritan Hospital opened on Lake Oconee Parkway. Built in a welcoming chalet style that feels right at home in this lakeside setting, the facility marked the beginning of a new era in local healthcare.
Where They Are Today
More than a decade later, St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital continues to grow alongside the community it serves.
A Critical Access Hospital With Big-City Capabilities
Good Samaritan is a Joint Commission-accredited, 25-bed acute care critical access hospital and it punches well above its weight. The hospital has made it a priority to bring specialist-level care to Lake Oconee (Greene Count), so residents don't have to drive to Athens, Atlanta, or Augusta for services they can receive right here.
Highlights include:
24/7 Emergency Services with Remote Stroke Certification, including telehealth neurology consultations
Advanced Imaging featuring a 640-slice CT scanner - the first of its kind installed in a critical access hospital in Georgia - plus MRI, 3D mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and echocardiograms
Surgical Services across general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, podiatry, and gastroenterology, with three fully equipped operating rooms
Rehabilitation Services including physical, speech, and occupational therapy
24/7 Laboratory Services
Outpatient Infusion services
Inpatient Acute (Non-Oncology) Care and specialty consultations
Rooted in Mission, Driven by Innovation
St. Mary's mission: to be a "transforming healing presence" in the community, isn't just a tagline. It's reflected in the hospital's ongoing investment in technology and access. When the community launched a $3 million capital campaign in 2019 to fund new imaging equipment, supporters showed up in a big way. The campaign not only met its goal during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, it exceeded it, allowing the hospital to upgrade to that record-setting 640-slice CT scanner.
The Good Samaritan Foundation, established in 2016 and led by a board of local community members, continues to champion the hospital's growth and ensure its services remain accessible to everyone who needs them.
Training Tomorrow's Doctors
Good Samaritan is also a teaching hospital in the truest sense. Over 100 medical residents from the Augusta University/University of Georgia Internal Medicine Residency Program have rotated through the facility, meaning patients here benefit from the energy and expertise of tomorrow's physicians, supervised by experienced local providers.
