A Heartfelt Mission at Lake Lake Oconee

A story of faith and community

Putnam Christian Outreach (PCO) has served the Lake Oconee area for decades, uniting local churches, businesses and volunteers. Guided by a board of directors, the organization operates full time and remains anchored to its mission: “Sharing God’s love by empowering our community through compassionate care”. PCO provides food, clothing and household goods while demonstrating the love of Jesus.

Executive Director Rex Corlett emphasizes that PCO is more than a pantry. In addition to food programs, the outreach offers medical and utility assistance and provides clothing and shelter for neighbors facing emergencies. Friendly staff and volunteers welcome new helpers and shoppers every day.

Programs that uplift

Food for Friends & the Backpack Ministry

No one should go hungry. PCO’s Food for Friends program distributes nutritious groceries to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Generous donations and support keep the pantry stocked, and special food distribution events are held on the third Monday of every month. There is no strict income requirement, so anyone in need may receive food.

Children also benefit from the Backpack Ministry, which sends weekend meals and snacks home with elementary and middle school students. A recent grant helped meet rising demand, ensuring kids arrive at school on Monday nourished and ready to learn.

Client Services and financial assistance

PCO’s Client Services team assists neighbors facing unexpected hardships. Assistance may include clothing, prescriptions, gas for medical appointments, food and help with utility bills. Eligible clients can receive up to three hundred and fifty dollars per year. Applicants provide basic identification and proof of need. A small medical library loans equipment and supplies for short term needs. Through these resources PCO helps families regain stability.

Spiritual care and community gatherings

On the first and third Friday of each month PCO hosts a brief chapel service. These gatherings offer moments of reflection and connection. The organization also holds charity golf tournaments, Harvest dinners and retail promotions that raise funds and celebrate community. Seasonal events and pop up shops provide cheerful ways to support programs.

Shop at the Thrift Store

Bargains with purpose

The PCO Thrift Store sustains many outreach programs. Shoppers can find gently used clothing, furniture, housewares, toys, books and electronics. A rewards program lets customers earn points toward future discounts. Every purchase helps fund the food pantry, backpack ministry and client services.

How to donate

Donations of clean and gently used items are welcome. Items may be dropped off Tuesday through Friday during business hours and Saturday until midafternoon. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sundays and Mondays. All goods are sold to fund outreach programs, and monetary gifts can be mailed to Post Office Box 3971, Eatonton, GA 31024.
