What does it mean to remember something never actually seen? For artist Tom Gonzales, the answer begins in the periphery, with fleeting images, thoughts, and observations that exist just beyond immediate focus.
The Madison Artists Guild & Gallery presents Faces and Places, a special exhibition featuring Gonzales’ work, October 9 through November 7, 2026. A public reception will take place Friday, October 9, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the gallery. The event is sponsored by Mark and Jean Nelson, with music by MaCayla Hodges and catering by Taco on Main.
Working with oils, acrylics, watercolors, and occasionally mixed media, Gonzales transforms fleeting impressions into tangible works of art. His pieces move between realism and expressive interpretation, allowing each medium to influence how an idea takes shape.
Gonzales finds the creative process surprising, often discovering that the finished work differs from his original vision. For him, that unexpected transformation is the most rewarding part of creating, revealing that each piece seems to have a life of its own.
Faces and Places invites visitors to explore the intersection of observation, memory, and imagination, discovering how unexpected artistic outcomes can become the most meaningful expressions of creativity.
